Nepal, often called the “Water Tower of South Asia,” is home to thousands of rivers and glacial sources, including the mighty Himalayas. Despite this natural abundance, the country faces an alarming and increasing problem of water scarcity. This contradiction highlights serious challenges in water resource management, urban planning, and climate resilience.
One of the major reasons behind water scarcity in Nepal is the unequal distribution of water. While the country possesses over 6,000 rivers, their flow is largely seasonal, with significant supply only during the monsoon. Many areas face acute water shortages during the dry months. The rural hill areas experience water scarcity due to difficult terrain, lack of infrastructure, and drying springs caused by deforestation and changing rainfall patterns.
In rural Nepal, women and children are most affected by water scarcity. They often have to walk long distances to collect water, impacting their health, education, and economic productivity. Waterborne diseases are also common due to poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water. The installation of this water pump helps to alleviate these problems for this community in the Rautahat District.
